Wi-Fi that actually works in every room: designing for coverage, not just speed

A fast Wi-Fi router in the server room tells you almost nothing about what coverage looks like at the far end of the building. Speed and coverage are two different problems.

The most common Wi-Fi setup we walk into on a first site visit is a single consumer-grade router, placed wherever the internet line happens to terminate, expected to cover an entire floor. It might deliver a strong signal in reception and next to nothing two walls and a lift shaft away. That's not a faulty router — it's the predictable result of never designing for the building it's actually in.

Why a site survey matters more than the hardware spec sheet

Concrete, steel reinforcing, lift shafts and even glass partitioning all attenuate Wi-Fi signal differently, and no two floor plans behave the same way. A proper site survey measures signal strength and interference room by room before a single access point is mounted, so placement is based on how radio waves actually behave in that specific building — not a generic coverage radius printed on a datasheet.

Coverage density beats raw access point count

Adding more access points doesn't automatically fix a dead zone; badly placed additional units can create co-channel interference and make things worse. We design for overlapping coverage with correct channel and power planning, so devices roam between access points seamlessly instead of hanging on to a weak signal until it drops.

Designing for device density, not just square metres

A boardroom with fifteen laptops, phones and a video conferencing unit all connecting at once needs different capacity planning to an open-plan office with the same floor area. We size access point capacity around expected concurrent device counts in each zone, not a flat coverage-per-square-metre assumption.

Separating guest, staff and IoT traffic

Coverage is only half the picture — a well-designed Wi-Fi network also separates guest access, staff devices and IoT hardware like access control or cameras onto isolated VLANs, so a compromised guest device or smart TV can't become a route into the systems that actually matter.
