A network outage in an office slows people down. A network outage on a production floor or at a quarry can stop physical operations entirely — which changes almost every design decision.
Industrial and operational sites — production floors, quarries, warehouses, logistics yards — put demands on a network that a standard office install was never built for. Dust, vibration, temperature extremes and long outdoor cable runs are the norm, not the exception, and the systems riding on that network are frequently tied directly to physical operations rather than just office productivity.
Hardware rated for the environment it's actually in
Standard office-grade switches and access points are not designed for the dust, heat and vibration typical of a production or quarry environment, and they fail faster there than the datasheet numbers suggest. Industrial-rated networking hardware, with appropriate IP ratings and extended temperature tolerances, costs more upfront and fails far less often in exactly the conditions where a failure is most disruptive.
Segmentation between OT and IT
Operational technology — the systems controlling machinery, weighbridges, conveyor systems or access-controlled plant — should sit on a separated network from general office IT. Without that separation, a compromised office laptop is a route into the systems that control physical equipment, which is a materially different risk than a compromised laptop on an office-only network.
Redundant paths for critical control systems
Where a network outage would halt physical operations, single points of failure aren't acceptable. We design redundant network paths for anything tied to production or safety-critical systems, so a single switch or cable failure doesn't bring an operational process to a stop.
Remote and outdoor connectivity across large sites
Quarries and large industrial sites often need connectivity spread across areas with no existing cabling and difficult terrain. Point-to-point wireless links and ruggedised outdoor access points are frequently the practical answer where trenching fibre isn't feasible, provided they're planned with proper line-of-sight and interference considerations from the outset.
