Designing a network that won't need replacing in two years

Most “network upgrades” aren't upgrades at all — they're a second attempt at something that should have been designed properly the first time. Here's how we avoid that on new installs.

The pattern is familiar. A business moves into new premises, an installer runs cabling to match the desks in the room on day one, switches are sized for the headcount at the time, and the Wi-Fi access point goes wherever the router happened to land. Eighteen months later, headcount has grown, a boardroom has been added, and the network can't keep up. What gets called an "upgrade" is usually a rebuild — because nothing about the original design left room to grow.

Cabling is the one thing you can't easily redo

Switches, access points and firewalls can be swapped out in an afternoon. Structured cabling run behind drywall and under raised floors cannot. That's why every install we scope starts with cabling capacity for the business the client expects to be in three years, not the one they're in today — extra runs to boardrooms and common areas, backbone capacity sized above current throughput, and cable management that doesn't need to be torn out to add a rack unit.

Switching that has somewhere to grow

The second most common bottleneck is switch port count and backplane capacity. We size switching with headroom for at least one more floor's worth of devices, and standardise on managed switches from day one so VLANs, QoS and segmentation are available when they're needed — not when someone's forced to re-architect the network under pressure during a security incident or a sudden hiring wave.

Wi-Fi as a designed system, not an afterthought

Wi-Fi coverage gets treated as something that "just happens" once the access point is plugged in. It doesn't. Building materials, floor plans and device density all change what proper coverage looks like, which is why access point placement should come from a site survey, not a guess. What this costs upfront — and what it saves

Designing for scale does mean a higher day-one cabling and switching spend than the bare minimum. In every case we've tracked, that upfront cost has been smaller than the cost of a disruptive mid-life rebuild — site downtime, re-cabling around live staff, and the security exposure of a network that was never properly segmented in the first place.
