Managed IT for industrial and operational environments
A standard office IT support model assumes you can patch overnight and reboot when something looks wrong. On a factory floor or a production line, neither of those assumptions holds.
Information technology and operational technology have always had different priorities. IT teams focus on data security, standardisation, and keeping systems current through regular updates. OT teams focus on reliability, safety, and equipment that, once installed, may need to keep running with minimal change for years. Supporting both under one generic model creates exactly the tension you'd expect.
Why "just reboot it" doesn't work here
A patch that a standard office network would apply automatically overnight can, on an industrial control system or SCADA network, interrupt a live production process, trigger a safety shutdown, or interact badly with legacy equipment never designed with modern IT security in mind. OT prioritises uptime and reliability first, security controls second — the reverse ordering from a typical office environment, and for good operational reasons.
What a converged support model actually requires
Effective IT/OT support means aligning both worlds without asking OT to accept IT's default change tempo. That means planned, negotiated maintenance windows instead of automatic patch cycles, network segmentation so an IT-side incident can't cascade into the operational network, and monitoring built around predictive maintenance — catching equipment issues from real sensor data before they cause unplanned downtime, rather than reacting after a failure.
Security has to speak both languages
Standards like ISA99/IEC 62443 exist specifically to give IT and OT teams shared ground for securing an industrial network without breaking the reliability OT is built around. That's a very different security conversation than the one a standard office network has, and a support partner needs to understand both sides of it, not just the IT half.
Why this matters more than it used to
As factory floors, sensors, and control systems increasingly connect to broader networks and cloud platforms, the operational environment stops being isolated from the risks that used to only threaten office IT. That connectivity brings real efficiency gains — but only if the support model protecting it understands that a dropped connection on the shop floor is not the same kind of incident as a dropped connection in the accounts department.
